Volume recording transactions among shipping or commission merchants who operated in Kentucky during 1880s but who worked in South Carolina during 1890s; volume may represent activities of one or more indivuals working in various firms. Business records list accounts (1885-1886, 1892-1895, and 1901) of transactions in various cites and towns, recording bills drawn, goods bartered and sold, sales of cloth, oranges, oysters, rice, peaches, apples, flour, sugar, grits, etc.; payments for freight and drayage on merchandise, and other expenses. Entries for assets held by E.W. Smith, Charles Tyler, and Herman Clark of Lexington, Ky., ca. 1885-1886; later entries, 1892-1895 show records of H. Bruns of Columbia, S.C., who formed partnerships, indentified as Composition No. 1, No. 2, etc., for distribution and sales of various products; persons listed include J.A. Clark and J.A. Satcher of Johnston, S.C. [Edgefield County]; J.H. Moore, C.V. Cullum, and J.C. Martin of Greenville, S.C.; and final entry dated 1 Jan. 1901, for assests of J.A. Satcher and Son of Wards, S.C., was left blank.
